AMTA safety conference to address key issues during tough economic times

CALGARY, Alta. – The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) will hold a one-day safety conference in Lethbridge, Alta. June 17 aimed at addressing vital safety issues transportation professional must not overlook even during difficult economic times.

Similar to the event held in Lloydminster, Alta. in January, the theme of the conference is ‘Safety, a Mindset, Not a Concept,’ and will feature retired RCMP officer and accident reconstruction specialist Grant Aune, who will help attendees identify and stop risky driver behaviour before accidents occur.

From the Workers’ Compensation Board, Leigh-Ann Moroz and Deborah Nilsen will also be on hand to share vital information on how to keep workplace injuries from increasing insurance premiums, and ultimately a company’s bottom line.

Spencer Beach will wrap up the safety conference with an eye-opening account of how he found himself trapped in a chemical fire that left the majority of his body with third- and fourth-degree burns and doctors only giving him a 5% chance of survival.

The AMTA brings the safety conference during a time it said has been a challenging one for many transportation companies across the province due to the economic downturn, and has seen many safety professionals having to do more with less, looking for ways to stay on top of key safety and compliance issues, while continuing to protect workers.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lethbridge Lodge, is $50 to attend and includes lunch. To register visit http://www.amta.ca/Events/safety_conference.htm.
