Tens of thousands of Ontario truckers banned from US for medical reasons: Report

TORONTO, Ont. — Nearly 47,000 Ontario commercial truckers won’t be allowed to drive in the US, thanks to a W designation on their licence that caught many of them off-guard, according to a CBC report.

The W code recognizes certain medical conditions that preclude them from operating in the US. The CBC report indicates letters went out to nearly 47,000 Ontario commercial drivers, advising them of the restriction, which goes into effect in May.

However, the report indicates many of those drivers simply haven’t submitted their medical records and could have the restriction lifted once they do so.

You can check out the full report here.

  • Got mine in the mail last Friday. I down graded to a “D” from “AZ” when I was due to re-test at 65. Seeing as I retired I didn’t want the hassle of doing the the road test etc. I’ve never heard of a W restriction till now & seeing as I will never drive a rig in the US not too upset but I bet there are a number of drivers who will get caught up in this due to medical issuses other than a ‘downgrade” Pete
