CALGARY, Alta. — The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) has kicked off its search for the province’s finest professional truck drivers to serve as industry ambassadors.

AMTA is assembling its 2013-2014 Road Knights Team, a group of drivers that will meet with community groups to raise awareness of how to share the road with trucks, as well as career opportunities available in the trucking industry. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 31.

“The drivers who make up the AMTA Road Knights Team build bridges with the community. They are invaluable for putting a human face on the trucking industry and for delivering factual information about road safety and the vast array of careers that exist in the industry,” says AMTA president Dan Duckering of Duckering’s Transport.

“The transport drivers who make up the team are first-class drivers who represent their peers – Alberta transport drivers dedicated to safety and professionalism in the industry,” said Don Wilson, executive director of the AMTA.

The AMTA introduced its first Road Knights Team in 2011 – made up of four drivers who hail from Calgary and Edmonton.

Officials note that the time requirement for being a Road Knight is minimal at about one or two days each month. Duties include speaking to job seekers about career opportunities and staffing AMTA’s information display at community events.

AMTA provides public speaking training and sets up the outreach activities. Sample speeches, videos and brochures are also provided by the association.

The program is open to both company drivers and owner/operators. Nominees must be based in Alberta and be currently employed as a full-time truck driver by an AMTA member company.
