OTA Road Knights educate students on industry’s career opportunities

BURLINGTON, Ont. -- Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Road Knights helped introduce some high school students on opportunities in the trucking industry earlier this week.

BURLINGTON, Ont. — Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Road Knights helped introduce some high school students on opportunities in the trucking industry earlier this week.

They were participating in the 25th anniversary of the Halton Skills Competition, held at M.M. Robinson High School.

The competitions and career showcase allowed OTA Road Knights to engage students and educate them on opportunities in the trucking industry. It was attended by about 4,000 students.

Road Knight Barry Elkiw, Meyers Transport, engaged the students inside the school, giving them a chance to learn more about the great opportunities in the trucking industry.

“This is what being a Road Knight is all about. Promoting the industry to young people, allowing them to get to know a real-life trucker and letting them to see what we do, is an important part of this program,” Elkiw said.

Rick Cameron of KBD Transport, also a Road Knight, offered students tours of a heavy-duty truck.

“Reaching and engaging face-to-face with energetic young people at the high school level, as well as their guidance councillors, showcases the industry first-hand, in a way perhaps they haven’t experienced before,” said Cameron.

The OTA is reminding carriers that this is an OTA Road Knight nomination year. Carriers are encouraged to nominate drivers for the 2015-2016 Road Knights squad by contacting renee.lyle@ontruck.org.
