Volvo Group secures funding to test DME

GOTHENBURG, Sweden -- Volvo Group has received funding from the Swedish Energy Agency to begin field testing trucks using the alternative fuel dimethylether (DME).

Volvo is very keen on the alternative fuel, which the company says can provide performance that's comparable to diesel at a similar price. It's a very clean-burning fuel, that allows for soot-free combustion, Volvo says. It has already produced a truck that can operate on the fuel, which is used mostly in Asia today.

DME is produced through the gasification of biomass or fossil raw materials.

As part of the field test, Volvo will build 14 trucks that operate on DME. They will be placed in service by the end of 2009.
