MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Electronic logs have proven to be a hit with Wheels Logistics.

The company says it began using Shaw Tracking’s Automated Hours-of-Service application in August and is reaping some tangible benefits.

“We have been running live with automated Hours-of-Service since August. Our drivers are no longer required to fill out paper logs; it is all automatically recorded based on when the vehicle is in motion.  We have been able to re-deploy two full-time positions since we have gone electronic. We no longer have to follow up with drivers on missing or incomplete paperwork and do not have to scan all the hard copies that came in. All of that has gone away,” said D.J. Massicotte, vice-president and general manager, Wheels Logistics.

“Our dispatch team is also more effective without having to call drivers and see how many hours they have available,” Massicotte added. “They are able to proactively check drivers’ hours and dispatch accordingly. We are also able to coordinate with our customers more accurate ETA’s and ensure that our drivers are unloaded upon arrival. We now have that type of granular visibility.”

Massicotte also said the company realized savings by eliminating the purchase of paper logbooks.
