Manitoba speeders to pay by the km/h

WINNIPEG, Man. -- Manitoba is changing the way it levies speeding fines to reflect the actual speed of the driver.

The changes, to come into effect in the new year, will result in charges of $7.70 per km/h over the posted limit.

“The change will make every ticket better reflect the actual offence and provide greater incentive for individuals to slow down,” said the province’s Attorney General, Andrew Swan.

Charging $7.70 per km/h over the limit will generally result in higher fines than under the previous formula which consisted of several categories.
