OTTAWA, Ont. -- Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty gave long-haul truck drivers a welcomed holiday gift, by following through on a previously promised increase to the tax-deductible portion of meal expenses.

In 2010, long-haul drivers will be able to claim 75% of their meal expenses, up from 70% this year. The deduction limit is slated to increase to 80% in 2011.

"Long-haul truck drivers are some of our country's hardest-working people," said Flaherty. "They play a pivotal role in our economy as they transport goods across the country and across our borders. Our government is pleased to support their important work by providing tax relief to these hard-working individuals."

The increase also applies to employers who pay for, or reimburse, meal costs for long-haul truck drivers that they employ.
