GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The truck market in North America remains sluggish but Mack Trucks has looked abroad to bolster its sales.

In 2009, Mack says it was the leading exporter of North American heavy-duty trucks.

Mack accounted for nearly one-third of all truck exports from the US, Canada and Mexico to markets outside North America, finishing with a 30.8% market share, the company announced.

It's part of a broader strategy to grow its presence in new and existing markets around the world and to satisfy the desire for American-styled trucks in other countries, the company claims.

Mack has found a strong interest in its trucks in worldwide construction and heavy-haul applications.

"International sales continues to be an area of opportunity and growth for Mack as we strengthen our presence in established markets, such as Latin America and Australia, and grow elsewhere, such as Africa and the Middle East," said Ron Huibers, Mack senior vice-president, international. "Our products have a strong reputation as the epitome of rugged, tough and reliable American-style trucks."
