Pat, I must agree with you. I own a small dry van rental fleet in London Ontario, which I recently acquired, as well; I was a service technician for GE/TIP in the early 2000's. When I left the London Branch things were already declining in the rental fleet business, mostly due to the closure of at least one major customer at that time. From my experience and the history of my company we are seeing is that the days of large fleets leasing trailers into 100's of pcs. are gone and not likely to return anytime soon. We have seen that the companies that used to operate this way have either purchased the equipment to fulfill these needs or the need itself no longer exists.

What does Lions Gate/PTR know, that TIP does not, in renting trailers in Canada, after TIP's long history here? With all the underutilized trailers parked at the moment, the rental expense for parking and storage alone are enough to sink any rental company in this economic environment, in my opinion. This appears to me, to be a deal that really transfers a problem out of one GE pocket (TIP) and into another,GE Capital. It may be a sleight of hand on GE's behalf. While I am sure LG/PTR can consolidate the admin portion and save some dollars, the fixed costs still has to be a huge numbers. Good luck to them, as I think they really are going to need it.
