1. Starting in 2011, dump semi-trailers built prior to 2003 are eligible for special annual permits exempting them from this weight reduction until they reach 15 years from year of manufacture (20 years for open hoppers).

2. Specialized Tankers include single semi-trailers with 3 or less axles that are: a carbon dioxide tank semi-trailer; a cryogenic tank semi-trailer; or a tag-axle tank semi-trailer.

3. Non-Specialized Tankers include single semi-trailers with 3 or less axles that are liquid or dry-bulk tankers other than those listed above as Specialized Tankers.

4. Starting in 2016, non-dump semi-trailers with 4 or more axles and all double trailers built prior to 2006 are eligible for special annual permits exempting them from this weight reduction until they reach 15 years from year of manufacture (20 years for liquid or dry-bulk tankers).

5. Definition of lift-axle includes any axle that is equipped with a device for altering the weight transmitted to the highway surface, or that is able to lift its tires from contact with that surface.
