WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has verified four different retread tires under its SmartWay Technology Program, a testing, verification, and designation program designed to help freight companies identify equipment, technologies and strategies that save fuel and lower emissions.

The following low rolling resistance technologies are SmartWay-verified when used on Class 8, line-haul tractor-trailers, according to the EPA:

• Continental’s HDL Eco Plus (precure) and HDT Eco Plus (precure) drive tires, as well as the HDT Eco Plus (precure) trailer tire; and
• Michelin’s XT1-AT (precure) trailer tire.

The EPA says the two manufacturers’ retread technologies can reduce NOx emissions and fuel use by 3% or more, relative to the best-selling retread technologies.
