LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dana introduced at the Mid-America Trucking Show, new additions to its Spicer E-Series steer axles, weighing 35 lbs less than previous models.
The new steer axles, which will be available in the first half of 2015, feature a steel-forged beam design that reduces axle weight while still providing the strength and torsional stiffness needed for braking, Dana announced.
The new axles are rated from 10,000-13,200 lbs.
Dana says OEMs will be able to maximize chassis weight distribution using the new axles while enabling customers to forego higher-rated, more expensive tires needed to support heavier front axles.
“Fleets today are looking for innovations across the entire vehicle to reduce weight, fuel costs, and maintenance, but they will not allow safety, productivity, and durability to be sacrificed in the process,” said Pat D’Eramo, president of Dana Commercial Vehicle Driveline Technologies. “We have applied our global engineering resources to deliver new Spicer E-Series steer axles that support the highest levels of performance, offering fleets weight savings that increase efficiency and reduce the total cost of ownership.”
Dana also came out with a new Spicer Heavy Axle Steering Components All-Makes product line, including complete coverage for steer axles, including knuckles, steer arms, crosslink assemblies, beams and whole axle assemblies. The company says the new line offers OE quality for a variety of heavy-duty vehicle and supplier programs.
Also new from Dana is a family of Spicer D-Series steer axles the company says will deliver greater stopping power and reduced maintenance, without the added weight that typically results from spec’ing air disc brakes. Rated from 10,000-14,600 lbs, the D-Series axles will feature an integrated air disc brake knuckle, allowing fleets to spec’ disc brakes without incurring extra weight compared to most S-cam drum brake axle systems. About 76 lbs is eliminated from the assembly.
