TORONTO, Ont. — Ontario has introduced legislation that would extend B-train length from 25 metres to 27.5 metres.

The change would help accommodate new technologies needed to meet air quality standards and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the province announced. It was packaged within the Keeping Ontario’s Roads Safe Act, along with other amendments to the Highway Traffic Act.

Among the changes, fines for distracted driving would climb from a range of $60-$500 to a range of $300-$1,000, as well as three demerit points.

  • It sounds as if the maximum length was changed to accommodate trailer boattails on vans and reefers. I wonder if this means one could stretch out the length of B train flatbeds?

  • Brent, out here in the west we’ve increased our chip vans to 27.5 metres, the reason been the weight of wood chips has decreased because of less green wood. We struggled to get our gross up to 58,000 never mind 63,500, hence the change in length, increasing volumes.
