MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Meritor has announced a plan to move remanufacturing operations from its Mississauga plant to a new ‘center of excellence’ in Plainfield, Ind.

The transfer of production will be completed by March 31, 2013, the company announced.

At the same time, it will move Canadian customer service and support to its Brampton facility, Meritor says. About 35 customer support employees will make the move from Mississauga to Brampton as part of the overhaul, Nancy Sarpolis, corporate communications manager, told Trucknews.com. The restructuring will result in layoffs for 85 people working at the Mississauga reman plant known internally as the Mascot Admiral plant.

“We do have folks on-site, helping with job assistance, etc. over the coming months,” Sarpolis said. “This is something that has been building over the past couple of years as the market has been declining where we sell our products, to the point now, where because of the conditions we needed to take this step.”

The company will invest about US$1.4 million into its Plainfield reman plant, adding 82 new jobs.

“We believe this investment will help us improve efficiency while better serving our customers in today’s competitive landscape,” said Doug Wolma, general manager, global aftermarket operations. “At the same time, this move will strengthen our global remanufacturing footprint.”
