Arlington, Va. American Trucking Associations’ truck tonnage index went down by 0.8% in June. The index equaled 128.9 compared to 129.6 in May.

The all-time high for the index was seen last November when it was 131.0.

In comparison to June 2013, the index went up by 2.3% and year-to-date compared to last year’s period tonnage went up by 2.8%.

The ATA chief economist Bob Costello said tonnage had gone up steadily for four consecutive months prior to June totaling 4.4%.

“Despite the small reprieve in June, the second quarter was much better than the first quarter,” he said. “Tonnage increased 2.3% from the first quarter, which was the largest quarter to quarter gain since the first quarter in 2013. Compared with the second quarter in 2013, tonnage increased 3.2%, a percentage point better than the first quarter year-over-year increase.”

  • One shipper told me he had 7 trucking companies biding under $2.10 per mile on a over the road contract and the local portion was as low as $48.00 per hour for the tractor or $55.00 per hour with the reefer trailer in Ontario. There still seems to be lots of trucks for the loads. I do not understand how ,at those rates driver will go up to the point to bring more truck drivers back into the trucks.
