STRATFORD, Ont. – The Central Ontario Chapter of the Fleet Safety Council has named its 2014 driver of the year.

This year the award was given to James Tiegs, a driver for Steed Standard Transport Limited (SST) in Stratford, Ont. Along with a certificate acknowledging his title, Tiegs was presented with a trophy and a driver of the year jacket.

In presenting the award Ken Wilson, safety and compliance supervisor for SST spoke about how Tiegs was a strong representative for the company, and noted his professional and courteous manner.

He also said that Tiegs was known for making suggestions the name of continuous improvement. He cited one example where Tiegs suggested “when the company updates the driver’s satellite e-mail list that they also include the office numbers as well. James subsequently, on his own time, listed the office contact numbers and the Qualcomm e-mail addresses for sending emails from truck to truck.”

Wilson also spoke of Tiegs’ efficiency behind the wheel, noting that when the company handed out its third-quarter fuel bonus cheques (which are based on fuel consumption, speed, distance driven and idle times) Tiegs received the second highest bonus.
