YELLOWKNIFE, NWT — The Northwest Territories have announced the first major contracts under their new NWT Highway Investment Strategy (HIS).

A contract to reconstruct 8.45 kilometres of Hwy. 3 between Yellowknife and Rae/Edzo has been awarded to RTL Robinson Enterprises of Yellowknife, and as part of the deal the company must hire 90 per cent of its workers from the north and train heavy-equipment operators and truck drivers.

Another contract has been signed under the agreement that will see 23 kilometres of right-of-way highway cleared in preparation for reconstruction next spring. Nishi-Khon Freeway was awarded the contract, and they will also have to hire 90 per cent of the workers from the north.

In total, HIS will result in more than $100 million in road improvement projects over the next four years.
