HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, Nfld. — The provincial government will spend $1 million on an environmental impact statement on Phase 3 of the Trans-Labrador Highway between here and Cartwright, Nfld.

The announcement was made by Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernest McLean, in conjunction with Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett.

“Government recognizes that before construction of Phase 3 can begin, we have to fulfill the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act,” says McLean. “While we have yet to determine when the actual environmental work will begin, I’m pleased to be able to commit $1 million to the process.”

The province says that it remains committed to securing the funding needed to complete Phase 3 — current estimates peg the total at about $100 million. Newfoundland is unable to finance the project alone.
