FERGUS, Ont. — It seems appropriate that the prestigious Truck News Owner/Operator of the Year award went to a guy who’s better known by his nickname ‘Motor’ than his given name.

Michael Motor Rosenau of Calgary was named the 2009 Truck News Owner/Operator of the Year during a special ceremony at the Fergus Truck Show Friday night. He was weighed down with prizes including: $3,000 in cash, a vacation valued at up to $2,500, a diamond ring fit for a champion, a trip for two to the Fergus Truck Show and an armful of other gifts from the award’s sponsors.

The award was sponsored by Freightliner, Goodyear and Castrol with supporting sponsors Natural Resources Canada and the Owner-Operators’ Business Association of Canada.

Rosenau has been driving professionally for 24 years and owns a 1997 Freightliner FLD120 which is frequently displayed at western Canadian truck shows. Inscribed on the side is his motto: ‘If it don’t shine, it ain’t mine.’

He’s been involved in the World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics and works tirelessly during the 18 Wheels of Christmas campaign, collecting donated food items and delivering them to local food banks in Alberta.

He has also volunteered to assist with the local Knights of Columbus’ Jamboree and has donated his truck to a local high school jazz band so they could participate in a parade. Rosenau has also received a Certificate of Teamwork from the Calgary Fire Department for assisting at the scene of a fire.

“Motor exemplifies what this award is all about,” said Truck News editor James Menzies. “He’s business savvy, has a pristine safety record, is passionate about the industry and perhaps most importantly he’s a true ambassador for the trucking industry, often volunteering his time, money and equipment to support worthwhile causes.”

For a complete profile of the 2009 Owner/Operator of the Year, see the September issues of Truck News and Truck West.  An upcoming episode of our WebTV show Transportation Matters will also feature an interview with Rosenau as well as footage from the presentation at the Fergus Truck Show.
