New overpass gets the nod

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — A dangerous intersection is being improved in Fort McMurray, with the building of a new overpass.

Work on the new overpass began two weeks ago, and is expected to continue until October 2002. The overpass is being built at King St. and Hwy. 63, and Earth Tech Canada project manager Frank Turner is delighted.

"I’m as keen as mustard about this project," Turner tells local media. "There’s been all sorts of different schemes designed and this one has been the most cost-effective. This is designed to take the largest traffic that comes into the city."

The $22-million project will also include the widening of the northbound bridge, which should be completed by November, while the construction of overpass ramps which will be used as a detour will be finished by Christmas.

Although no highway closures are expected, traffic will experience backups and drivers should be prepared for some delays.
