Retail sales on the climb

OTTAWA, Ont. — Sales by Canada’s largest retailers are increasing, having totalled $6.1 billion in April.

This represents a 3.7 per cent increase over April 2000.

Food and beverages was the only commodity group to record a year-over-year decline in sales at negative 3.4 per cent.

A restructuring in the food sector contributed to the size of this decline and excluding this sector sales for the large retailers rose 7.8 per cent.
