Saskatchewan highways budget increases by almost $90 million

REGINA, Sask. — After a nearly $90-million increase from last year’s total, it was announced yesterday that Saskatchewan’s highways budget is a whopping $664.5 million for this fiscal year —one of the highest budgets in the history of the Ministry.

This is good news for the trucking industry (which contributes 70% of all provincial exports) as they can expect many highway upgrades soon, including improvements to bridges and culverts. The province is also planning to twin Highway 39 and Highway 7 from Saskatoon to Delisle. As well, plans are being made to change some highways from Thin Membrane Surface (TMS) roads to Supergrid roads, which would allow them to support primary weights.

“It’s great to see spending on highways and infrastructure projects now considered an investment, rather than an expense,” said Nicole Sinclair, a spokesperson for the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.

The Ministry and transportation companies alike are hoping for a longer construction season with warm weather to ensure all repairs and projects in the budget can be attended to.

  • Wow 90 million extra, 900 million might be whats needed. Transcanda is crap except for a few spots. The Regina ring road is close to being a gravel road. hwy 11 to saskatoon is mostly a pitted rutted side shaking road that should have been rebuilt 10 years ago.
