Trucks will face road tolls

YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T. — With its highways crumbling apart thanks to the harsh environment, the Northwest Territories plans to impose road tolls on industrial truck traffic to pay for repairs.

Joseph Handley, the territory’s Minister of Finance, says will help compensate for the fact federal funding for transportation infrastructure is distributed on a per capita basis.

With only 42,000 residents, the territory ends up with $4.5 million out of the pot of $600 million, Handley adds.
