VANCOUVER, B.C. — Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) has selected a local firm to provide the telematics solution that will allow it to implement its GPS truck tracking system.

Webtech Wireless announced it was chosen to provide GPS for the port’s Smart Fleet Trucking Strategy, first announced in 2013. The strategy involves a three-year action plan that looks to improve the efficiency and reliability of the container truck sector.

By equipping all trucks serving the port with GPS, PMV hopes to reduce wait times and improve efficiency.

Over the last two years, the port installed more than 1,000 Webtech Wireless GPS locators in approved drayage trucks. An additional 1,100 GPS systems will be installed by July 2014, Webtech Wireless announced.

The locators use satellite positioning and cellular communication to send real-time alerts of a vehicle’s location to dispatch, offering greater insight into vehicle activity, routing, congestion and idle times. That data then allows fleet managers to make operational enhancements.
