What are dragons but metaphorical challenges. They are either encountered in the pursuit of a goal as part of the journey in a personal quest or, they come to your village uninvited …think Godzilla coming to destroy the city full of unprepared and unsuspecting citizens.
There is a definite difference between the two experiences – that being degree of conscious choice. One sets forth in motion towards a goal within our own agenda or time table versus the other being reactive to someone else’s agenda be it fate or simply life.
This “how to manual” is directed more towards slaying these dragons in the pursuit of goals and objectives, towards a quest or journey, towards an active pursuit of a better state or future. These instructions become part of a life lived in conscious choice of one’s agenda – be that of a better job, a salary increase, a promotion, losing weight, writing a book or whatever your pursuit may be. If you want to succeed at anything, please note dragons are par for the course.
Not an “if”, but “when” you encounter your dragon(s) please consider adopting my personal tried, true and tested technique:
1. Have a “Why, Must or Compelling” reason. In a purpose driven life, everything you do must have a reason. Otherwise, you will find yourself wondering aimlessly through life and will become nothing but quick prey to someone else’s quest or agenda. The clearer the “why” the easier to know what you are willing to do, what you are willing to risk and what the expected outcome is. This will also help you understand which dragons are worth the fight and which aren’t.
2. Armour yourself. Be Prepared. “Suiting up” with your armour serves two goals. First, there is the mental ritual of getting ready, from gladiators to hockey players, to suit and ties. Secondly, by always making suiting up a conscious exercise, a ritual, a call to battle you psychologically prepare to take command of situations.
3. Your weapons are your skills. And just like weapons, they need to be sharp, up to date and relevant for the battle at hand. The phrase “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight” comes to mind. Educate yourself on the challenge at hand. The more you know about your particular dragons the better and more effective you will be at outsmarting them and realising what your best strategy of attack is.
4. Courage & Self-confidence. I recently discovered the etymology (history) of the word courage. It comes to us from the Latin “Cor” or heart which becomes the old French “Corage” to the current “Courage”. “From the heart” remains a common metaphor for inner strength. To act with courage is to act from the heart. It is a “must” not a should, could or a wouldn’t it be nice. Courage is a “must” when the alternative is death or annihilation, hurt, failure, etc. Sometimes courage will mean to stay and fight and sometimes courage will mean to walk away …as long as the decision is made from a place of power not fear and from a place of strength and not weakness.
5. Willing to die, bleed or get just plain bruised. Willingness to risk injury or failure in battle. Willingness to face criticism or potential sabotage. Willingness to get dirty. You cannot “fly” with your feet nailed to the earth. Failure or setbacks are par for the course. It is what we do with them, the learning we derive from them, the never losing sight of the ultimate goal, the constant remembering of the reason why the difference between failure and a lesson well learned is, most importantly, good to know. These are some of the reasons you will get back up each and every time and be relentless in your pursuit, whatever the outcome.
