Drivers satisfied with about half the shippers/receivers they serve

TORONTO, Ont. — Professional drivers responding to the Ontario Trucking Association’s Operation UpGrade survey of the best and worst shipper practices are so far split on the performance of the industry.

Half the shippers/receivers rated so far have been given Honour Roll status while the other half were assigned to the Detention Hall. Drivers have indicated many shipping facilities must do a better job of turning around drivers in a reasonable time and removing waste from the system.

Drivers indicated their appreciation of shippers who do a good job providing an environment free of harassment and discrimination.

Here are the key findings of the first month of survey results:

  • “Providing an environment free of harassment and discrimination” is the top attribute of the good shippers rated, followed by allowing access to shipper facilities (ie. washrooms). Bad shippers scored lowest in terms of retention times, responsiveness of dockworkers and honouring appointment times.
  •  Overall, 72% of shippers/consignees recognized as ‘good’ were shippers, while only 20% were receivers.
  • More than half (54%) of the ‘bad’ customers were receivers/consignees; only 35% of shippers fell into this category.
  • Distribution centres and warehouses were well represented among Honour Roll companies, representing 36% and 40% of facility types, respectively. Retail locations lagged, representing just 5% of ‘good’ customers.
  • Most responding drivers (83%) have been driving for more than five years.

  • The way we paid needs to change as many truck drivers including myself have to give it up due to unpaid expenses and wages. They have not had money to even renew their driver permits. I and 2 other are currently living at the homeless shelter run by the salvation army in Brampton. My example was hit from the back Jan. 2 in the Mt when stopped to avoid a car in a snow storm. I was hit from the back and SGI. will not pay to fix the tractor and i used all cash i had to short term repairs. More repairs were need they did not pay for them my truck is Thunderbay. The trucking company i was working for did not pay back for faxes border crossing fees or other expenses that they said they would cover. I do not drink was a hard worker and am very thankful for the salvation army. The Case worker says this happens all the time with truck drivers and their pay.

  • Shippers and receivers will not change until society change’s which is happening now when the 24/7 crap stops and the corporate greed stops and the rich get enough attitude will change it is a greedy society that drives people’s attitudes greater than thow but it all revert back it would only take 1 strike buy the truck drivers nationally and watch the reversal
