Freight rates rise in April

TORONTO, Ont. — Base rates and fuel surcharges both increased in April, according to the latest Canadian General Freight Index published by Nulogx.

The index rose 1.7% in April when compared to March, marking the largest one-month gain since July 2010. The base rate rose 1.1% while the fuel surcharge climbed from 18.8% of the base rate to 19.9%, contributing significantly to the rise in freight costs.

Nulogx noted April marked the seventh straight month of fuel surcharge increases, which have now reached their highest point since November 2008.

“Lately, increasing fuel prices have been the major factor affecting transportation costs,” said Doug Payne, president and COO of Nulogx. “However in April we saw a notable increase in Ttuckload base rates begin to contribute to this rise in freight costs.”

  • This is great news for companies but more importantly owner operators but getting the money to them is a problem sometimes it seems companies are not giving the fuel surgharge to O/O it seems theres a floating rate in the buisness when you ask other drivers about what they get there is a flucuation between whats being passed on so there should be legilation in place so O/O arent getting short changed on surcharge as the truck must keep rolling not company proffit margine, bankrupt operaters dont get the freight there, and this ways heavily on guys tryin to make ends meet makin the same profit we made 20 years ago and everything else is upalmost double and why can oil companies own truck outfits offer capped fuel prices yet rape the general public and Independent companies where is goverment legislation on this?
