Humber College to host Trucking Career Day

by Truck News

TORONTO, Ont. — Humber College is hosting a career day Apr. 25, for students looking to embark on a career as a professional driver and existing drivers looking for a new employer.

The college says 19 trucking companies will have recruiters on-hand at Trucking Career Day to discuss career opportunities. A sampling includes: Schneider National, Canada Post, Challenger Motor Freight, Coca-Cola, Kriska Transportation, TransX, Werner Enterprises and Labatt Breweries.

There will also be officials on-hand to talk carriers through the new Canada-Ontario Job Grant, which provides training funds for existing employees. The grant covers up to two-thirds of the training costs per employee, up to $10,000.

“The current high demand for commercial drivers has had a positive effect in increasing wages and benefits,” said Rick Mikula, program liaison officer at Humber. “Many employers have introduced signing bonuses, tuition reimbursement programs and other incentives as a way of attracting drivers. Humber graduates are in demand. Many of our graduates are employed within weeks of completing the program and can earn a starting wage of anywhere from $45,000 to $55,000 a year.”

The career fair will be held Saturday, Apr. 25 from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Humber Transportation Training Centre at 55 Woodbine Downs Blvd., second floor, Toronto, Ont. For more info call 416-798-0300 or e-mail truck.info@humber.ca.
