General Tire turns 100, will celebrate at MATS

by Truck News

FORT MILL, S.C. — General Tire is turning 100 this year, and will be celebrating by launching a new line of tires at the Mid-America Trucking Show next week.

General Tire was founded in 1915 by William O’Neill and Winfred Fouse in Akron, Ohio. The company says they were the first to develop a pneumatic tire for heavy trucks.

By the 1930s, General Tire was the largest truck tire manufacturer in the US, with a full range of pneumatic tires available, the company says.

In 1987, Continental acquired the tire division of General’s GenCorp parent company and in 1995 the name was changed to Continental General Tire. It was renamed Continental Tire North America in 2000.

  • General Tire can’t be celebrating its 100th birthday because the company was acquired by Germany’s Continental in 1987.

The former American company died at age 72.

Only the brand name lives on………….at the overseas aggressor who acquired it.
