Navistar, GM partner to build medium-duty conventional trucks

by Truck News

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — GM and Navistar have announced a new agreement, which will see the two companies develop and assemble medium-duty conventional cab Class 4/5 commercial vehicles.

The partnership will allow Navistar to strengthen its product line and GM to expand its Chevrolet commercial truck portfolio, they announced in a release.

“Bringing medium-duty conventional cab trucks back into the portfolio strengthens Chevrolet’s commitment to providing commercial customers with more choices and one-stop shopping for a versatile lineup of trucks, vans and crossovers,” said Ed Peper, US vice-president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales.

The trucks will incorporate GM’s commercial components and engines with Navistar’s rolling chassis configurations. Production is slated to begin in 2018, with the trucks being built in Navistar’s Springfield, Ohio plant. About 300 new jobs will be created and Navistar will invest $12 million into the facility, the companies announced.

“Our collaboration with GM is another example of our customer-centric, open integration approach – providing our customers with the best technologies available,” said Bill Kozek, president, Truck and Parts, Navistar. “By working with an industry-leading company like GM, we’ll be able to enhance our medium-duty product portfolio and leverage our scale and expertise in manufacturing medium-duty trucks.”

There are not yet any plans to offer the Chevrolet-branded trucks in the Canadian market, a GM spokesman told Trucknews.com. However, International will sell its version in both the US and Canada.

    • Or a little more individuality than the International cab with a Caterpillar grill and hood. Guess we will see if this keeps up the moniker of Intersmashable Trucks LOL
