New tridem policy in Alberta

CALGARY, Alta. – Alberta Infrastructure has announced a new policy governing the use of tridem drive tractors in the province. The policy stipulates the following:

1. Tridem drive axles must be equally spaced.

2. The maximum tridem spread is 2.8 metres.

3. All three axles must drive. No pusher or tag axles are allowed.

4. The tridem drive axle must be a common suspension, which equalizes the weight within 1,000 kg of each axle. Lift axles are not permitted.

5. Tires measuring a minimum of 10 inches are required on drive axles.

6. The track width minimum is 2.5 metres and the maximum is 2.6 metres.

7. The wheelbase minimum is 6.6 metres and the maximum is 6.8 metres.

8. The minimum steering axle weight is 25 per cent of drive axle weight.

9. The maximum steering axle weight is 7,300 kg, except for permanently mounted equipment.

10. Axle locking devices must be capable of being disengaged during turning movements.

11. Operation of tridem drive tractors requires an “Equipment Exemption Permit.”

12. A specification sheet and scaled weights must be submitted prior to a permit being issued.
