Should truck passengers be required to wear seatbelts?
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is looking for public input on whether passengers riding in property-carrying commercial motor vehicles should be required to use safety belts.
The FMCSA says the Notice of Proposal Rulemaking would hold both trucking companies and commercial drivers responsible for ensuring that passengers riding in the truck cab be buckled up, just as drivers have been required to do for many years.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 275 passengers of large trucks in the U.S. who were not wearing seatbelts were killed in crashes in 2013.
