Improvements coming to B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway

MERRITT, B.C. – B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway will soon see some major upgrades aimed at making the road safer for the commercial trucking industry on the busy corridor that links the Lower Mainland of the province with the rest of Canada.

The Box Canyon chain-up area, located 30 km north of Hope, B.C. on Highway 5, will see an expansion to accommodate up to 70 commercial trucks and will also get a new deceleration and acceleration lanes, new washroom facilities and more parking.

Work will also commence on a new chain-off area at the existing Coquihalla Summit Recreational parking lot, as well as the extension of the third southbound lane near the Great Bear Snow Shed.

Jati Sidhu, member of parliament for Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon made the announcement, along with B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone, May 25.

“Transportation and distribution are a vital part of our local, regional and national economies,” said Sidhu. “These upgrades will support the continued growth of industry, helping local businesses get their goods to market faster and more efficiently, while reducing congestion and improving safety for the thousands of drivers who travel through the area each day.”

Stone added: “Improving the economic efficiency and safety of the commercial trucking industry is a key priority in B.C. on the Move, the province’s 10-year transportation plan. This joint funding allows us to move forward and build projects that are instrumental in promoting economic development throughout B.C. and supporting the province’s Pacific Gateway Strategy.”

  • Great, now how about some places for the trucks to stop and rest… oh yeah, that right… BC just wants them OUT. deliver and get the heck out of town… they don’t really want any trucks to stick around. God forbid they might need a place to rest their weary heads… heaven knows that they want the merchandise BUT then they want those unsightly monster to evaporate… And heck, we’ll just ticket them to death…
