SAINT-GEORGES, Que. — Manac launched its first aluminum flatbed 10 years ago to lighten the load for semitrailers, but its new Darkwing series has been completely redesigned to improve performance and strength as well.

The riveted, three-piece main beam is 27 inches high with a camber of 5 inches, producing a concentrated load of 60,000 lb./4 ft. In order to keep the number of welds to a strict minimum, Manac opted for a mechanical assembly of accompanying subcomponents, which the company says also acts to streamline maintenance.

Manac says the floor structure is rigid to provide enhanced stability and integrate several cargo retention devices, including aluminum tube side pockets, rub rail spacers, six rows of floor-mounted securement tracks with grab hooks and sliding winches. Each device is certified to a weight of 5,500 lb. and complies with Canadian and US requirements, according to Manac.

The bolted rear bumper, which Manac says meets both Transport Canada and US Department of Transportation standards, is designed to greatly facilitate maintenance. The upper bumper section that houses the rear lights is ruggedly designed to allow for the use of a lift truck with a load capacity of up to 16,000 lb.

The Darkwing flatbed includes a suspension system that was tested to 20,000 jack-knife simulation cycles. Officials say the few steel components found on the flatbed are treated using a high quality painting process. Darkwing flatbeds are available in a wide range of configurations and axle spreads and come with a seven-year warranty, Manac says.
