New Brunswick eyes Ontario, Quebec speed limiter laws

FREDERICTON, N.B. — New Brunswick is taking a close look at implementing speed limiter legislation for heavy trucks, but it’s in no rush to do so according to a report in local media.

 

“It’s certainly not on our legislative calendar this session,” Public Safety Minister John Foran told local newspaper, the Times & Transcript. However, officials did say they’re considering implementing speed limiter legislation and that they’ll be keeping a close eye on how it plays out in Ontario and Quebec, where truck speeds are already capped at 105 km/h.

 

“We’ll be keeping (up) strong communication from those areas and we’ll get more evaluations and go forward from there when New Brunswick has to make a decision,” Foran told the Times & Transcript.

 

Unlike in Ontario and Quebec, some New Brunswick highways have speed limits of 110 km/h.

  • Speed limiter have always been a hot issue in the trucking industry.
    However coming off a 25 year driving career I see a lot more positives than negatives regarding this issue. Ontario and Quebec have implemented this and the results have been very good. Fewer accidents, lower fuel cost and maintenance all go down with reduced speed.
    Speed limiters in the trucking industry are a must and should be implemented sooner than later across Canada and the U.S.
