New International LT Series boosts fuel economy 7%

LAS VEGAS, NV - International's new flagship line of Class 8 over-the-road trucks - the LT Series -- has been unveiled with a wide array of driver-friendly improvements in the cab, and the promise of "unrivaled fuel efficiency" overall. "The new International LT Series reflects our vision for the future of the trucking industry, with a host of advancements that support improved driver safety and productivity, as well as fuel efficiency and uptime," said Bill Kozek, Navistar's president - truck and parts. "This new vehicle reflects our strong belief that integrating the best technology will provide customers with a significant operating advantage." The LT Series will be offered as a day cab, in 56-inch low-roof and high-rise sleepers, and 73-inch high-rise and sky-rise sleepers. Options under the hood include the new 2017 Cummins X15 engine with ratings up to 500 horsepower in the Efficiency Series and up to 565 horsepower in the Performance Series. The truck can also be powered by the proprietary 2017 Navistar N13 engine, available in the spring, which produces up to 475 horsepower and 1,750 lb-ft of torque in a design that is 500 to 600 pounds lighter than other big bore engines.

VW, Navistar: What’s the Deal?

Well, it finally happened. Rumored for many months, if not years, and now a fait accompli, Volkswagen Truck & Bus has bought a piece of Navistar International. While the gossip mill mostly envisioned an outright purchase by the German giant, yesterday's announcement described a less dramatic deal: VW is buying a 16.6% stake in the Illinois company. It will pay US$15.76 per share or a 25% premium over Navistar's 90-day volume-weighted average price as of Aug. 31, or 12% over Navistar's closing price on Sept. 2. Navistar will receive US$256 million from the equity investment to be used for general corporate purposes.

1,500 Navistar Trucks in Canada Recalled

LISLE, IL - Nearly 1,500 Navistar International model trucks in Canada are among 16,500 that are being recalled here and in the U.S. The bulk are ProStar models, but the recall also includes the DuraStar, WorkStar, TransStar and LoneStar models, all from the 2012-2013 model year. The move follows an investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the trucks may have accelerator pedals that do not fully return to the closed throttle position, resulting in engines idling at slightly higher RPMs, which can keep the engine brake from engaging. The investigation was opened following complaints from truck owners. Navistar identified 1,233 warranty clams related to accelerator pedal issues, with 70.3 percent of these claims on manual transmission vehicles.

GM, Navistar Sign Medium-Duty Truck Agreement

DETROIT and LISLE, IL -- General Motors Co. (GM) and Navistar announced Wednesday they have reached a long-term agreement to develop and assemble future medium-duty, conventional cab Class 4/5 commercial vehicles. According to a news release, the alliance allows Navistar to strengthen its product lineup and GM to expand its Chevrolet commercial truck portfolio. The future products will be jointly developed using Navistar's expertise in rolling chassis configurations and manufacturing capabilities, and GM's commercial components and engines. The vehicles are slated for production in 2018. GM offered medium-duty trucks for decades before getting out of the business in 2009 in the midst of its bankruptcy reorganization and the recession. That decision followed the death of a deal for Navistar to buy GM's medium-duty business.
