Campaign launched to expedite ELDs

by Truck News

TORONTO, Ont. — The Canadian Trucking Alliance has launched a letter-writing campaign to call on all provinces to mandate electronic logging devices (ELDs) by the end of 2019.

The link to the e-letter campaign, reaching out to Canada’s transport ministers, can be reached by clicking here. Separate letters have been written for carriers or owner-operators already running ELDs and wanting to see them as soon as possible, as well as carriers about to invest in the technology.

The letter stresses that the end of paper logbooks will reduce fatigue and distraction-related collisions and violations, make fleets more efficient, and provide drivers a “happier, safe working environment” by restricting unreasonable demands.

“The ELD mandate will be one of the most significant safety measures each province can adopt to improve road safety. To delay it could cost the lives of travelling Canadians that would have otherwise been saved with an expedited schedule,” said alliance chairman Gene Orlick, of Orlick Transportation in Calgary. “This letter reinforces to the government the industry wants a rule in place by the fourth quarter of 2019. That should be more than enough time for government and industry to conduct all the necessary investments, education and training.”

  • It’s kind of funny that they’re all chomping a the bit to get Eld’s into trucks.
However they all become mute when it comes to shoddy driver training, lack of parking, unpaid time and detention ,unsafe roads,or ridiculous and ineffective HOS rules.
This leads me to believe that ELD’s are strictly about money in one way or another.
Why else would big Trucking be behind it like they are,yet ignore all the other real safety issues that their drivers have to deal with everyday?
It’s about money and pushing drivers to run every second that they can and nothing else.

  • I am a small gravel and lowbed service i am trying to find info weather i need eld or not. I look on line be it keeps moveing me to usa elds. Fleet size 3 trucks total 80,000 km a year

    • Long story short, whatever qualifies to fill out a log book translate to eld’s. Unless the truck travels within a 160 km radius a day, truck is eld exempt.

  • Eld’s Is a solution in search of a problem.. witch is really too bad cause the Trucking industry has lots of problems that need solutions!

  • Why does big trucking want ELDs for all? Simple, regulate out little guys, and be able to fill their trucks against the fences with teams of people fresh off the boat from non-north american origin…… Can throw anybody behind the wheel of their autoshift cascadias and i-shift volvos. They are self insured so as long as they dont hit a school bus load of kids, just write it off….including the drivers. Back to the imigration office for another pair to dump in the next truck. People with no homes have no reason to come home so they can leave them on the road as long as they want. Its ironic how the cvor/safstat system is set up that the usual crew that have highlight reel crashes seem to be un scathed by these accidents, where as the smaller fleets have the hammer come down on them.
