Comments sought on EOBRs

OTTAWA, Ont. — The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) has circulated a discussion paper on electronic on-board recorders (EOBRs) and is now seeking feedback on an anticipated EOBR standard.

The CCMTA’s stakeholders were asked to answer a series of questions and provide information and comments by March 11. The discussion paper can be found here.

The release of the paper follows a directive from the Council of Deputy Ministers of Transportation to explore issues related to an EOBR mandate. A detailed, final report on the subject is expected to be presented in October, 2010.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) supports a universal EOBR mandate in Canada.

“We were not comfortable with leaving it entirely to the US to decide what a North American EOBR regime should look like,” says CTA CEO David Bradley. “Had we done that on hours-of-service, for example, we wouldn’t have such things in Canada as the ability to split time in the sleeper berth, which gives drivers and carriers a lot more flexibility. But, the only way Canada can participate in the development of a North American system is if it has some ideas of its own in terms of what an EOBR rule should look like.”

  • EOBR’s in Canada should follow the European model each driver is issued an idenity card inserts it in the EBOR and is paid for every hour he or she works!But our fine outstanding carriers will follow the path they did with speed limiters and pick and chose only the parts of the European standards that benifits the carriers needs not the drivers.
