Edmonton refinery up in smoke

EDMONTON, Alta — Oil haulers have not been able to gain access to Petro-Canada’s Edmonton refinery this week, but it has nothing to do with striking workers.

A power outage nearly lead to disaster at the refinery, as petroleum products had to be flared off, filling the east Edmonton sky with black smoke.

“What happened on Saturday was very serious,” Petro-Canada spokesperson Donna Hildebrant told local media.

The refinery, which normally produces about 130,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products each day, was shut down until today.

Meanwhile, the strike continues at the refinery, where workers are stalling trucks running in and out while demanding a better pension plan.
