Hours-of-service rules top concern of US trucking executives

ORLANDO, Fla. — The new hours-of-service rules that went into effect earlier this year rank as the top concern among US trucking executives.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released its annual list of trucking industry concerns this morning at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition.

The second biggest concern of trucking executives was the FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program. The driver shortage was the third, while concern about the economy lessened, placing fourth.

“ATRI’s annual survey of top industry issues makes it easier for us to keep track of all the complex forces affecting motor carriers and drivers so that we can focus on running a safe and profitable industry,” said ATA chairman Mike Card, president, Combined Transport in Central Point, Oregon.

“As we all know, the trucking industry constantly faces changes and challenges to how we operate safely and efficiently,” added ATA president and CEO Bill Graves. “However, our industry has always responded to these issues with determination and ATRI’s work gives us the information to decide where to focus our energies first and foremost.”

  • I think customers will have a huge shock when HOS rules are strictly enforced. The freight rates will need to go up dramatically . If I make X$ per week I will still need that amount to pay my bills

  • Sorry John but you will likely be the one taking the hit once AGAIN. So suck it up and have a good sleep. Why do people even bother driving trucks?

  • I was listening to “Road Dog Trucking” on satilite about the driver shortage & new HOS.Their guest was stating that the driver income has slipped to below 1990 income, cost of living has shot way up, & the number of days away from home & hrs. worked for less pay have “skyrocketed” New regulations put on the drivers back & deadlines for delivery have made this line of work “not very inticing for someone to “EVEN THINK” about getting into!!!! Some companies are trying to get drivers by offering “NEW” equipment with all the bells & whistles, but that is not enough, when you can’t support your family, pay the bills & are away for much longer time peroids!!!! Quit worrying about the HOS & look after the driver that you have!!! Pete

  • I’m a Canadian truck driver and would leave Vancouver,BC and take that load to LA / USA and pick up produce and sit around a wait for the call to back up and get my load and haul it back to Canada and barely get back in time for my time off. With new US rules it will be even tougher,so I am considering not going down there again. It is a shame as I like going into USA but it comes down to the buck and time off.Change theses rules back USA.
