Ice Road Truckers star dies in plane crash

by Truck West

MISSOULA, Mont. – Darrell Ward, star of the hit show Ice Road Truckers, died today (Aug. 29) after his plane crashed southeast of Missoula, Mont.

Ward was returning to Montana after an appearance at The Great American Truck Show in Dallas, Texas when reports say the pilot of the plane appeared to be attempting to land at a small airstrip when something went wrong and instead went down, hitting several trees.

Ward was 52.

The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the accident and will release more information when available. Both Ward and the co-pilot died in the crash.

Ward was part of the History Channel show for the past four seasons and was set to begin filming a pilot for a new documentary-style TV show about plane wreck recoveries.

  • Sorry to read this. We always thought that Darrell was a great ambassador for our industry. He represented the kind of person that we need in order to dilute some of the horrendous PR we get from a few of the no so professional drivers that are out there.
Our condolences to his friends, family and co-workers.

  • As far as I am concerned you sir are everyones hero and you have touched everyone at one time or another no matter what you did on the show you did come out on top I know its just a show but I guess that’s what makes you best at what you do.
My heart goes out to your friends and family.

  • Loved Darrell and Ice Road Truckers. Being from the North I totally realize the risk. I also thought Darrell could be a double for Kevin Costner. So sorry for the family loss.
