Manitoba lifts spring weight restrictions

WINNIPEG, Man. — Manitoba’s spring road weight restrictions will be lifted today, Transportation and Government Services Minister, Steve Ashton, has announced.

“We are finally through the critical spring thaw period when many portions of our aging infrastructure are most at risk,” says Ashton. “The road restrictions were necessary to prevent damage from the combination of wet weather conditions and high traffic volumes.”

Under the program, allowable weights were reduced on specific routes to avoid damage during thawing and spring rains, which can weaken the road structure. The limits imposed are based on a percentage of normal axle weights carried by vehicles 4,500 kg and heavier.

“We appreciate the co-operation of all those that use our roadways,” adds Ashton. “The spring road restrictions are important safeguards that help to protect our roadways.”
