Owner/operator protest slows freight traffic at Vaughan CP terminal

VAUGHAN, Ont. — A contract dispute between a group of owner/operators and CP Rail has lead to a protest at CP’s intermodal terminal in Vaughan.

About 80 O/Os who move CP’s railcars by truck for General Cartage, Canada Drayage and Sim-Tran parked their vehicles, and blocked the main entrance on Rutherford Rd. near Highway 427 early Monday, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

The protest centres on the drivers’ new three-year contract, introduced July 9, that changes how they are paid, effectively cutting their wages by about 30%, according to the Star.

A driver at the protest said the cut comes after a previous 30% cut introduced in 2009.

The protestors have vowed to keep up their picket line around the clock, according to the report.

On a normal day, the terminal handles up to 1,900 trucks, according to a CP official.

  • Well I can say I support them on this one. I have seen what they get paid. All I can say without being nasty, is CP stop being cheap or I should say frugal(being nice about it).

  • Here we go again the big guy cuts the little man. Alan Jackson had it right when he sang the little man. What does this country want fro the little guy. WE cannot continue to work these hours for little or no pay while the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. and the working guy goes nowhere. They at the top see and know what they are doing. Caterpillar closed and walked away why can’t the little guy get ahead. Obama in the U.S preaches equality for all our government preaches riches for the rich. It is time to take a stand against this and support the truckers in their efforts. Good Luck and God bless
