Roadcheck safety blitz coming next week
ARLINGTON, Va. — The largest targeted enforcement program on commercial vehicles in the world is coming back to North American highways next week, as inspectors gear up for the annual Roadcheck safety blitz. The event, which runs June 8-10, will take place at more than 1,500 locations across Canada, the US and Mexico.
Thousands of federal, state, provincial and local inspectors will be conducting comprehensive North American Standard (NAS) Level I Inspections and other related roadside enforcement activities.
Officials at the Commercial Vehicle Safety Association (CVSA) say the majority of Roadcheck safety inspections are not performed at random. Inspectors target trucks and drivers for inspection based upon the safety record or previous inspection records of the motor carrier, the driver, or upon the observation skills of the trained inspectors.
Last year, 9,683 CVSA and FMCSA certified inspectors at 2,145 locations across North America performed a record 72,255 truck and bus inspections. Of that total, there were 56,486 NAS Level I inspections, the most comprehensive roadside inspection. Last year’s overall compliance rate of 80.4% was the highest since 1996 and the overall driver compliance rate of 95.7% was the best ever, according to CVSA reports.

As a senior driver who just completed my third roadtest to see if I can still drive after 44 years of accident free driving I would like to know how many out of province drivers over age 65 get a ticket because they have not taken a road test.My local MPP Bruce Crosier (Essex) says it is not mandatory for out of province drivers because it is a licensing issue in Ontario only.So I guess only Ontario senior drivers are a safety hazzard.
“CVSA and FMCSA certified inspectors”… That’s quite a reach in descriptive parameters for many of these individuals that should have a psych analysis done before being given these positions. Many cannot even interpret their own rulebooks.
Do the math! if that many inspectors did that many inspections, then each inspecter did less then eight inspections in the 3 day blitz. Not very impressive numbers. In the 15 yrs I have been driving the roads of N.A. I have had only 2 level 1 inspections. Have had less then 10 inspections of any kind. And I do not avoid going out during the blitz nor do I avoid any scales during the rest of the year. Needless to say I am not impressed by the inspection numbers of these inspectors. Easily 90% of the scales I pass are closed. Only a very few that are open even do minor inspections for log books, BOl’s etc. Granted I do not run west of I-35 so I cannot speak of those scales further out.
