Toronto’s HOV lanes could become toll lanes in the future says Premier Wynne

by Truck News

TORONTO, Ont. — The Pan Am Games have brought a lot to the city of Toronto of late, including the collective hatred for American rappers and, of course, the shared admiration for sport.

However, the Pan Am Games have also brought traffic congestion – and lots of it – thanks to the HOV lanes that have been implemented across Toronto and Hamilton highways.

And now, according to a report by the Canadian Press, the temporary HOV lanes could return in the form of toll lanes.

“Premier Kathleen Wynne says she wants to apply lessons learned from the HOV lanes set up this summer on the Queen Elizabeth Way, some 400-series highways, the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway to creating toll lanes,” the report said, adding that the Premier said money from the toll lanes would be an important source of revenue to fund the $130-billion, 10-year transit and infrastructure plan.

Mayor John Tory added that the city of Toronto will wait to see where the new toll lanes will go so they can create  “a sensible network for drivers.”

The HOV lanes are scheduled to be removed after the Games end in late August.

  • No problem Steve charge trucks tolls (we can’t use the HOV lanes) now the Panam surcharge becomes the toll surcharge the general public is the one that is going to pay in the end. I pay 1450.00 per year for my 5-ton plate. Maybe if provincial government was fiscally responsible with our tax money we would not need more tolls and taxes.
Yeats ago the money collected from Drivers and plate liesences went to The Ministry of Transportation for roads and infrastructure.

    • Tolls are much fairer than high plate charges. tolls reflect usage and will not force low usage trucks off the road.

      • Tolls are fair to who Steve, you?, the casual user who pays once on the way to work…. Or is it fair to the truck that hauls everything YOU and everybody else needs in daily life and has to be on the roads every day, all day to get product to the shelves. The truck that already pays exorbanant insurance, fuel, licensing , taxes etc etc….. How much does your little license sticker cost?…$90-100 and you all cry about that….. Try paying the multiple thousands for the same license sticker trucking is forced to buy. . And multiply that over a fleet. Bet we hear you crying again when your loaf of bread is $5 to help cover the cost of shipping. Keep driving costs up and sooner or later It will make its way to the cost of your consumer goods. So, yah…go ahead and toll the truckers too…. Great plan. Even better when you consider Wynne will squander it on things you will never see or use…because if you think they will use it on the road network…think again.

  • Wow! What a shock, the cash-strapped, lying provincial govt. thinks tolls are acceptable if they didn’t mis-manage and steal our money we wouldn’t need toll roads.

  • Seriously Wynne? And just what will you do with all the collected money?, steal it or lose it or under budget some hydro project and blow it all there ? Seems that’s what you do best.
