Volvo introduces new collision mitigation system

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Volvo has announced availability of a new driver assist collision mitigation system developed with Bendix.

Volvo Active Driver Assist combines radar and cameras to provide emergency braking and help maintain safe following distances. The system is fully integrated into Volvo’s Driver Information Display, eliminating the need for an additional in-cab display.

The system is always active and can provide stationary object detection and braking, even when cruise is not on. Volvo Active Driver Assist uses a front bumper-mounted radar sensor and a windshield-mounted camera. The radar sensor has a detection range of 22 degrees wide and 500 feet in front of the truck. The camera features a wide viewing angle.

“The wider angle offered by the camera enables the system to further detect objects which may present a danger to the driver,” said Ashraf Makki, Volvo product marketing manager – technology. “The comprehensive Volvo Active Driver Assist system offers camera and radar to offer the most data about an imminent event, helping to mitigate the potential for unintentional collisions or lane changes.”

The camera also allows for an integrated lane departure warning system.
