For-hire motor carriers enjoy increased revenues

OTTAWA, Ont. — There were an estimated 2,706 for-hire trucking companies based in Canada with annual revenues of $1 million or more in the fourth quarter of 2000.

This total marked a significant jump compared with 2,504 $1 million-club carriers in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Among this group, fourth quarter 2000 operating revenues totalled $5.0 billion, an increase of 11.5 per cent from the fourth quarter of 1999.

Operating expenses posted by the same fleets reached $4.6 billion, up 9.0 per cent with fuel surging by 32 per cent. The overall operating ratio was 0.93 — unchanged from the fourth quarter of 1999.
