OTTAWA, Ont. — Canada-based, long-haul for-hire carriers carried more than 278 million metric tonnes of freight in 2000, an increase of 3.4 per cent from 1999.

Although domestic activities accounted for 73 per cent of the total tonnage and 78 per cent of the total shipments, transborder movements generated 47 per cent of the total revenues earned and 49 per cent of the total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.

Preliminary data is now available from the For-hire Trucking Survey for all quarters of 2000. For more information, contact Statistics Canada’s Louis Boucher, at 613-951-8906.
