Roadblocks could hinder next year’s G-8 Summit
CALGARY, Alta. — Truckers may want to plan ahead — way ahead — and avoid driving through Calgary from June 26 to 28 next year.
That’s because activists are already planning to block all major roads in and around Calgary to protest next year’s G-8 Summit, being held in the picturesque resort community of Kananaskis.
A group of 20 activists have already met to discuss strategy, and they have decided roadblocks may be more effective than invading the park that politicians say is impenetrable.
“I’m of the opinion we should stay out of Kananaskis. It’s a trap. When the day of action comes, there’s lots of juicy targets,” one activist told local media. “Putting thousands of people in a field to yell at cops is maybe not the best thing … There are a lot of opportunities to protest, not just yelling over a fence.”
In addition to blocking main arteries around the city, activists also discussed clogging up the airport when delegates are scheduled to arrive in Calgary.
